What Citrine is

Citrine is a golden variety of quartz, coloured by traces of iron. Natural citrine is uncommon and gently coloured, a soft lemon-honey. Dadi called it the merchant's stone and pressed one into your palm whenever you began something new.

What people use it for

It is associated with optimism, fresh beginnings and steady enterprise: the confidence to start and the follow-through to keep going. People keep a piece on the work desk, in a cash box, or in a bag when setting out on something new. A hopeful old custom, not a promise.

How to tell a real one

Natural citrine is a soft, even lemon-to-honey gold, warm rather than burnt orange, with no chalky white base where a heated crystal point was cut. Deep amber stones with a white bottom are heat-treated amethyst, common in the trade but a different thing. Ours is the natural, gently coloured kind.

How to cleanse and charge it

A short rinse in cool water and a pat dry is enough. Citrine takes gentle morning sunlight well, so an hour or two on a sill is fine; otherwise leave it out under the moon once a month.

How to use it

In Vastu and Feng Shui the south-east is the wealth corner: a citrine point or a small cluster there is the classic placement, or on the desk where you do the work. A tumbled stone in a wallet or cash box is the pocket version. It sits well alongside pyrite and clear quartz.
