A little piece of selenite, pale and pearly like a sliver of moon, striped with fine fibres that catch the light like satin. Dadi rested her other crystals against it overnight, selenite is the housekeeper of the shelf, lifting the heavy air from a room and wiping the tiredness off tumbled stones and bracelets. It is also the one stone that rarely needs cleansing itself. Never water it, selenite draws it in and starts to crumble, so just dust it with a dry cloth. Soft enough to mark with a fingernail, so keep it somewhere safe from knocks.

Questions about this stone

Selenite is the housekeeper of the crystal shelf. Dadi used it to freshen a heavy room, and to wipe the tiredness off her other stones: rest them on it overnight and lift them clear in the morning. It is also the one stone that rarely needs cleansing itself.

Real selenite is very light for its size, striped with fine fibres that catch the light like satin, and soft enough to mark with a fingernail. It should look faintly glowy, never glass-hard. If it feels dense and heavy, it is likely another stone sold under the name.

Never water: selenite drinks it in and begins to crumble. Simply dust it with a dry, soft cloth, and leave it in the moonlight now and then if you like. That is all it asks.

    I use it to clear my other stones

    Rest my bracelet against it overnight and it feels fresh in the morning. The satin shine is lovely in the light. Never wash it, the card reminds you.

    Soft stone, handle gently

    Picked up a faint mark in transit, but that is just selenite being selenite. Still glowing.
