A raw chunk of black tourmaline, matte black and ridged with fine lengthwise grooves like a bundle of rods, dense and cool in the hand. Dadi set one by the front door — the guard stone, for holding the day's noise and other people's moods on the doorstep. Many keep a piece near the entrance, the desk, or the phone. Keep it away from water: the iron in it can rust and the surface flake. Dust it dry and rest it on selenite or in the moonlight, a little more often than your other stones, since its whole work is soaking things up.

Black tourmaline is the guard stone. Dadi kept a piece by the front door, to hold the day's noise and other people's moods on the doorstep. Many keep one near the entrance, the desk, or the phone. Old protective lore, kept up because it helps people feel a little more settled.

Real black tourmaline is matte to lightly shiny, with fine lengthwise grooves running down it like a bundle of rods, and it feels dense in the hand. Its edges are brittle. A too-glossy, too-light, perfectly smooth “crystal” is usually black glass or resin.

Keep it away from water: the iron in it can rust and the surface can flake. Dust it dry, leave it on selenite or out under the moon, and it is ready again. Cleanse it a little more often than your other stones, since its whole work is soaking things up.

    Raw and ridged, feels substantial. You can see the rod-like grooves the guide describes. Keeping it away from water as advised.

    Edges are a little crumbly

    A few tiny flakes in the pouch — expected for raw tourmaline. A solid protective stone otherwise.
