Black Obsidian

The grounding mirror — for setting down what is heavy and standing steady.

What Black Obsidian is

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too fast to crystallise. Cultures around the world have used it for blades and for scrying mirrors. Dadi thought of it as a mirror stone — it shows you where you are, then helps you stand there.

What people use it for

It is used as a grounding, protective stone: for releasing something heavy, steadying yourself in an unsettled moment, and feeling more solid on your feet. Some keep a piece for reflection or journaling. Wear a bracelet on the left wrist to hold the steadiness in, or keep a tumbled stone on a desk.

How to tell a real one

Obsidian is genuine glass, so it is smooth, shiny and slightly warm to the touch, often with a faint smoky translucence at a thin edge held up to light. It can carry small shell-shaped dents from where it was worked. That glassiness is the stone itself, not a sign of a fake.

How to cleanse and charge it

Rinse briefly in cool water and dry it, or simply wipe it clean. Rest it on selenite or under the moon between uses. Handle it gently — obsidian chips, and a fresh edge can be sharp.

How to use it

Keep a piece where you sit to think, or carry a tumbled stone through a hard week. It pairs with black tourmaline for protection you both place and carry, and with selenite, which clears it. Obsidian can feel intense for some people; a smaller piece is an easy way to start.
